ABOUT US
Dr Matthew Brick
Orthosports is led by Dr Mat Brick, who specialises in arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery of the hip, knee and shoulder. Dr Brick is fellowship trained in sports orthopaedic surgery, and a graduate of the University of Auckland School of Medicine and the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association Training Programme.
Dr Brick’s passion for sports and activity-related injury follows a successful career as a professional triathlete and later as a two-time World Champion Duathlete. He has also represented New Zealand at World Championship level in cycling. He remains actively involved in sport through racing, coaching and research. Orthosports is based at New Zealand’s premier sports facility, AUT Millennium.
Dr Brick undertook fellowship training in Pittsburgh working with Dr Freddie Fu (knee) and Dr Marc Philippon (hip), as well as in Perth with Dr Keith Holt and Dr Greg Witherow. Dr Brick is on a number of international committees relating to hip arthroscopy, including the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) Hip and Groin Committee and Faculty for the International Society of Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA). Dr Brick has completed more than 3000 hip arthroscopies, the outcomes of which have all been prospectively followed in a very large database. This places him in a group of a handful of surgeons internationally who have the experience of thousands of hip arthroscopies as well as the extensive knowledge of outcomes, complications and revision rates.
Dr Brick is actively involved in research and teaching. He supervises fellowship training of orthopaedic surgeons from New Zealand and overseas and is involved in clinical research, lecturing and publishing on his results. You can see his published research papers here. and read an article by his most recent fellow, Dr Foo Gen Lin, about his experience working with and learning from Dr Brick here.
